Their Community. Their News.

Girl Reports produces community news magazines, written by the participants in its journalism  program. The girls write articles on what’s happening at their school, in their community, and in their  country. The magazine gives girls the opportunity to explore their voice and their culture, providing unique insight into their society, traditions, and the gender-based inequalities that shape their lives.

A magazine is something you can put in the hands of the community and in the hands of parents and teachers, and donors - it breaks barriers to participation and inspires support. Putting all their training and learning into a tangible product gives them incredible satisfaction and motivation to continue in the Girl Reports program.

Click the DOWNLOAD button under each magazine to learn about what our girl reporters have to say and subscribe to receive our seasonal publications via email. Please also consider sponsoring our student publication stipends, a unique feature of the Girl Reports program which has both immediate and long-lasting positive impacts on the lives of our participants. Girls in the developing world have many responsibilities at home, which can often pose barriers to  schooling in general, and especially to participation in after-school activities. Compensating the girls monetarily for their work can help break these barriers to recruitment and retention and elevate their status in their home. Getting paid also contributes to our participants’ confidence and feeling of  independence. They are proud to contribute economically to the household and grateful for the opportunity to prove their worth in a measurable way. Finally, paying girls for their work plants a seed in the minds of their parents, family, and community that girls are capable of earning money outside of the home, as a result of their education.

The following quotes from our participants illustrate the outcomes of these contributions beautifully:

“When I gave money to my parents, my mother and father became so happy. My father said that its your result of your hard work and that one day in your life you will make a lot of money to help others and me too. He never clips my wings in the area of study, I am his last hope to make identity of my family members in this world. Even I also became so happy and my friends were happy too.” ~ Gauri

“This makes my family feel proud and they are very glad and hopeful too that I will do something better in my life. I am feeling very happy being part of this journalism club because it gives the chance to learn many more things in the course of life and dvelop the confidence to be independent.” ~ Bishnu

“When my family members got to know about my hard work, they also feel that I can do a great job in my life and family’s too. My family member’s encourage me for this work, they feel that I am independent and can do something with my life.” ~ Pooja

“When I got money, then my parents believed that I am doing hard work in my life. Before my family scolded, saying why am I wasting my time in journalism class, it does not benefit you and to focus on my studies. But now when I got the money, they didn’t scold me. It helped change their thoughts and now I am very happy.” ~ Rima
